Something great brewing down SIMCOE COUNTY, Ont.
What do you get when you have five craft breweries and three cottage country communities? If you're smart, you get the Beer Bus! Five fabulous breweries in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Creemore have planned a fun in the sun filled summer of getaways and events in Simcoe County's Southern Georgian Bay triangle. Beer Around the Bay is all about festivals, food music, and of course, tours and tastings of local bevvies. And it's all within a two hour drive of the GTA. Today, we're sipping our way around the county on the new Beer Around the Bay tour. The shiny black Beer Bus picks us up in Collingwood door to door service from Joseph Lawrence House, our charming, historic B I love most about these breweries is that everybody is so passionate about their craft," says Beer Bus Company owner/operator Paul Izdebski, as we head off on our three town tour. "They won't just give you a pint of beer and say 'here you go.' You'll learn about how to taste it, what to look for and talk about what makes these local craft beers so special." Hint think spring water in Creemore. Their funky Beach Bar serves up the Beach One Cerveza with a view of the world's longest freshwater beach apparently that's 87,500 beer cans long. It says so right on the colourful lime green and Georgian Bay blue can of the light, crisp summer brew. Our next stop is the lovely village of Creemore ps i love fashion louis vuitton neverfull nestled in the hills just south of Georgian Bay that I know and love. In fact, I was at the opening of Creemore Springs Brewery 30 years ago. Their tasting room has many more small batch beers on tap these days, but their flagship Premium Lager is still my favourite. I'll be back to help celebrate the well known brewery's 30th anniversary at the Creemore Springs Copper Kettle Festival on Aug. 26. And yes, the brewery still uses local spring water trucked in every day. And no, the town is not called Creemore Springs. Our scenic drive from Creemore takes louis vuitton shoes comfortable us through fertile farmland and rolling hills, with Instagram views of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay. Izdebski catches us up on the local craft beer boom along the way. "All three of louis vuitton casual shoes cs-070 the local Collingwood breweries opened in 2104, within a couple months of each other. And what I love is there's no competition amongst them. Even midweek at lunch time, the place is packed. I'm told everyone has their favourite hand crafted beer here but I'm picking my four samples for their fun names Wee Willi Winkles, Crowded Camper, Red Sunset and Route 26. Their Brewshi Asparagus Roll is one of the best appetizers I've had anywhere. Northwinds is opening a second location at nearby Blue Mountain Village this winter. Izdebski, might have trouble getting folks back on the Beer Bus after this stop. I'm already planning to come back to for the brewery's family friendly Craft Beer Festival, Aug. 18 19. Love that the tasting bar is right in the heart of the brewery, too. And the popular beers on tap go down even better with stories of Collingwood's famous side launched ships that they honour. "This harbour was too shallow to launch the massive new ships the conventional way bow or stern first because they'd hit the bottom," our tour guide says. to get a look at these historic events, right here in Collingwood." TALK OF THE TOWNS"What I love most about living up here, is when you're walking down the street in downtown Collingwood, people will stop and talk to you," says recent Toronto transplant and Beer Bus Company owner Paul Izdebski. "It really does embody the small town feel with large town amenities. You're never a stranger in Collingwood." What I loved most was hearing all the great stories about this historic harbour on our boat tour with Kevin Johnston of Collingwood Adventure Voyages. Hiking around the scenic harbour and strolling the tree lined streets, gorgeous historic red brick buildings have been transformed into trendy cafes, art studios, theatres, chic shops and upscale restaurants. Visitors learn more from the self guided Discover Collingwood Walks at the visitor centre in the beautifully restored train station, now home to the Collingwood Museum. Creemore Beyond the beer, the charming village of Creemore is well worth a visit. "You have to come find us," says local historian Chris Raible as we stroll up Mill St. past quaint shops and restaurants. "Unlike many small Ontario towns, there is no highway running through Creemore so our main street doesn't really go anywhere except into the heart of our community." And this tiny town louis vuitton bags price in qatar has a "big heart," which is what the Gaelic name "Cree Mohr" means in English. Lovely Victorian red brick homes and shops, shaded by ancient maples, lend a timeless feeling. Even sprawling Creemore Springs Brewery blends nicely with historic Mill St. New heritage markers lead you back through time, past an original settler's log cabin and "North America's Smallest Jail." (It says so, right on the sign). Wasaga Beach The famous Wasaga strip along Beach Area 1 has just had a makeover. The colourful beachfront storefronts and restaurants are sporting fresh paint and retro murals. Fun flip flops stencilled on the street lead to yummy food outlets in the Main Street Market, where 1950s style trailers serve up everything from cool gelato to a spicy taste of the islands at Caribbean Paradise.
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park continues its sandy stretch along eight beach areas and historic Nancy Island. The historic site will be under siege the weekend of Aug. Nancy.
